Dorry, a graduate of Cornell with a degree in economics, began her teaching career at the University of Delaware in 1982 in the Writing Center, where she tutored students from freshmen to PhD candidates who wanted to improve their writing skills. Later, she moved into the English Department where she a taught variety of writing courses. In addition, she worked with faculty across the campus on developing writing components in their courses. In the mid-1990s, she became the writing tutor for the MALS program, and starting in 2005 she was part of a three-person team who taught MALS 601: Introduction to MALS. During this time, she also published academic articles, short stories and wrote a weekly column for the Newark Post.
